Meet Simon the Cat. He’s like a regular cat. Only fancy. Learn how to make him with this free crochet pattern.

Pattern Notes

Simon is made using continuous rounds. Mine measured 14 inches tall, but you could play around with yarn and hook size to get a bigger or smaller cat. How firmly you stuff him will also affect overall height. I like to stuff my amigurumi very firmly!

Stitches and Abbreviations

Here are the crochet stitches and abbreviations I use. Click on them if you need a refresher on how to do any of these.

Any parts of the pattern written in brackets [ ] will tell you that this part needs to be repeated. It will be followed by an ‘x’ to let you know how many times it should be repeated.

Crochet Cat Pattern

The head and the body are crocheted in one piece. I make the muzzle first because after completing the head, I like to sew on the muzzle and embroider the face before continuing on to the body.

Muzzle

With white yarn, create a magic ring.

Round 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Round 2: inc x 6 (12)

Round 3: inc x 3, 3 sc, inc x 3, 3 sc (18)

Rounds 4-5: sc around (18)

Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

Ears

Make 2.

With orange yarn, create a magic ring.

Round 1: 4 sc in mr (4)

Round 2: sc around (4)

Round 3: [inc, sc] x 2 (6)

Round 4: [inc, 2 sc] x 2 (8)

Round 5: [inc, 3 sc] x 2 (10)

Round 6: [inc, 4 sc] x 2 (12)

Round 7: [inc, 5 sc] x 2 (14)

Fasten off the first one. Don’t fasten off the second, but continue on to the head.

Head

Continuing on from the second ear, fold it in half and crochet across, working through both stitches.

Chain 10.

Fold the first ear and crochet across it, working through both stitches.

You now have 7 sc crochets across each ear and 10 chs between them. This is the foundation for the rest of the head.

Round 1: Ch 1, and turn your work. Sc in the front loops only of each of the 7 sc of the first ear. Place a stitch marker in the first sc. This is the start of the round. Sc across the 10 chs. Sc into the front loops only of each of the 7 sc of the second ear. Turn your work. Work 7 sc into the back loops of the second ear.

Sc 10 across the other side of the ch. Sc 7 across the back loops of the first ear. Your first round is complete. (48)

Round 2: sc around, place your first sc in the one you placed a stitch marker in (48)

Rounds 3-18: sc around (48)

Round 19: [3 sc, dec, 3 sc] x 6 (42)

Round 20: [dec, 5 sc] x 6 (36)

Round 21: [2 sc, dec, 2 sc] x 6 (30)

Round 22: [3 sc, dec] x 6 (24)

Round 23: [sc, dec, sc] x 6 (18)

Round 24: [dec, sc] x 6 (12)

Without fastening off and before continuing to the body, stuff the head firmly.

Attach the eyes between rounds 10 and 11. Stuff the muzzle and sew it to the face below and between the eyes. Using black yarn, sew a nose and mouth onto the muzzle and whiskers on either side of it.

Continue on from the head. Stuff firmly as you go along.

Round 25: sc around (12)

Round 26: [inc, sc] x 6 (18)

Round 27: [sc, inc, sc] x 6 (24)

Round 28: sc around (24)

Round 29: [3 sc, inc] x 6 (30)

Round 30: sc around (30)

Round 31: [2 sc, inc, 2 sc] x 6 (36)

Round 32: sc around (36)

Round 33: [inc, 5 sc] x 6 (42)

Rounds 34-40: sc around (42)

Round 41: [dec, 5 sc] x 6 (36)

Round 42: [2 sc, dec, 2 sc} x 6 (30)

Round 43: [3 sc, dec] x 6 (24)

Round 44: [sc, dec, sc] x 6 (18)

Round 45: [dec, sc] x 6 (12)

Round 46: dec x 6 (6)

Arms

Make 2. Create a magic ring with orange yarn. Stuff firmly as you go along.

Round 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Round 2: inc x 6 (12)

Rounds 3-6: sc around (12)

Round 7: dec x 6 (6)

Rounds 8-17: sc around (6)

Fold the top of the arm and sc across to close it. Fasten off, and leave a tail for sewing.

Attach the arms to either side of the body just below the head.

Legs

Make 2. Create a magic ring with orange yarn. Stuff firmly as you go along.

Round 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Round 2: inc x 6 (12)

Round 3: [inc, sc] x 6 (18)

Round 4: [sc, inc, sc] x 6 (24)

Rounds 5-6: sc around (24)

Rounds 7: 6 sc, 6 dec, 6 sc (18)

Rounds 8: 3 sc, 3 dec, 3 sc (12)

Round 9: [dec, sc] x 4 (8)

Round 10-22: sc around (8)

After finishing the last round, you want to make sure your final sc is on the side of the leg, halfway between the heel and the toe of the foot. If your last sc isn’t where you want it, add however many sc you need to get it there. For me, I had to add 2 sc.

Fold the leg in half and sc across to close it up. Fasten off, leaving a tail for attaching to the body.

Attach the legs to the bottom of the body.

Tail

With orange yarn, create a magic ring.

Round 1: 3 sc in mr (3)

Round 2: inc x 3 (6)

Round 3: [inc, sc] x 3 (9)

Rounds 4-24: sc around (9)

Fold the tail in half and sc across to close it. Fasten off, and leave a tail for sewing to the body.

Sew the tail to the back of the body.

At this point your cat is complete! You could stop there or add a bow for extra cuteness.

crochet cat no bow

Bow

Using green yarn, ch 30 and slst to the first to form a circle.

Rounds 1-4: ch 1, hdc in each ch, slst to first hdc (30)

Fasten off, and leave a really long tail.

Fold the bow in half, and wrap the tail around the middle several times to cinch it.

Tie the tail around the back of the bow, and use the rest to attach it to the cat. I sewed mine just below the head to make a bow tie, but you could also sew it to the ear for a regular bow.

Voila! Your kitty is done! He’s the perfect size for your little one to love!
