This is Blaze the Dragon. He may come across as hot-headed, but his friends will tell you he’s warm and snugly inside. Keep scrolling to learn how to make him with my free crochet dragon pattern.

Pattern Notes

This chubby, little dragon is made using continuous rounds. He measures almost 12 inches from his butt to the tops of his ears. But this could vary if you choose to use a different hook or yarn than I did, or depending on how you stuff it. I recommend stuffing it firmly.

Stitches and Abbreviations

Here are the crochet stitches and abbreviations I use. Click on them if you need a refresher on how to do any of these.

  • magic ring – mr
  • chain – ch
  • single crochet – sc
  • slip stitch – slst
  • increase – inc
  • decrease – dec
  • back loops only – BLO
  • “double crochet decrease” – “dcdec”
    • I put this in parenthesis because how I do it isn’t really a true double crochet decrease
    • To do this, yarn over, put your hook into the next stitch, yarn over again, and pull it through. You now have three loops on your hook. Put your hook through the next stitch, yarn over, and pull it through. Now you have four loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull it through three of the loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull it over the remaining two loops on the hook.

Any parts of the pattern written in brackets [ ] will tell you that this part needs to be repeated. It will be followed by an ‘x’ to let you know how many times it should be repeated.

Materials

yarn for dragon

You don’t have to use the same hook and yarn I did. It just might affect the finished size. I love the yarns I chose for the horn and wings because they’re sparkly. It helps add a little extra magic!

You could also use buttons for the eyes or nostrils, or you could embroider them. I’m really terrible at embroidery, so I avoid it whenever possible!

Crochet Dragon Pattern

I like to begin with the body and sew on the pieces as I go.

Body

With the Red yarn, create a magic ring. Stuff firmly as you go to make sure you get an even stuffing.

Round 12: [5 sc, inc, 5 sc] x 6 (72)

This would be a good place to add the safety eyes. I put mine between rounds 33 and 34 about 13 stitches apart.

Round 40: [dec, 9 sc] x 6 (60)

Round 48: [dec, sc] x 6 (12)

Fasten off by slip stitching to the first stitch of Round 49. Weave the end of the yarn around the posts of the stitch of the last row. Pull it tight, knot it, and hide the end.

Nose

With the Red yarn, create a magic ring.

Round 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Round 2: [inc] x 6 (12)

Round 3: [inc, sc] x 6 (18)

Round 4: in BLO, sc around (18)

Fasten off by slip stitching to the first stitch of Round 4. Leave a long tail for sewing it to the body. Add the safety eyes.

Attach the nose to the body right below and between the eyes. I don’t stuff the nose until after I’ve sewn it most of the way onto the body.

Legs

Make four.

With the Red yarn, create a magic ring.

Round 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Round 2: [inc] x 6 (12)

Rounds 3-6: sc around (12)

On two of the legs, finish off by slip stitching to the first stitch of Round 6. Leave a long tail for attaching. Stuff.

On the other two, before fastening off, stuff and fold them in half and crochet across to close.

Attach the legs to the body. The closed legs go on top. The open legs go on the bottom.
