In this tutorial, you will learn how to half double crochet, seen abbreviated in crochet patterns as ‘hdc’.
The first time I say “half double crochet” to someone, they always ask, “…do you mean single crochet?” No! It’s very different. It really is like doing only half the work of double crochet. You can see the difference by checking out my single crochet tutorial and my double crochet tutorial.
Half Double Crochet Instructions
- Before inserting the hook into the top of the stitches or chain you’re working into, yarn over so you have two loops on your hook to begin.
- Now, insert hook into the top of the stitches or chain you’re working into and yarn over.
- Pull through the top of the stitch or chain. This creates an extra, third loop on the hook.
- Yarn over and pull it through all three loops on the hook.
And that’s a half double crochet! If you need more help getting started with crochet, check out my beginner crochet lessons beginning here.
