Meet Confetti the Unicorn. She likes cupcakes and long naps on the beach. Keep scrolling to learn how to make this chubby, sparkly unicorn with my free crochet pattern.

Pattern Notes

This chunky gal is made using continuous rounds. From her butt to the tip of her horn, she measures almost 12 inches. But this could vary if you choose to use a different hook or yarn than I did, or depending on how you stuff it. I recommend stuffing it firmly.

Stitches and Abbreviations

Here are the crochet stitches and abbreviations I use. Click on them if you need a refresher on how to do any of these.

Any parts of the pattern written in brackets [ ] will tell you that this part needs to be repeated. It will be followed by an ‘x’ to let you know how many times it should be repeated.

Materials

  • size 5 or F crochet hook
  • scissors
  • needle for weaving in ends
  • yarn for the body (I used Mainstays Basic Yarn in Soft Pink)
  • yarn for the horn (I used Red Heart With Love Metallic in White)
  • yarn for the hair (I used Lion Brand Yarns Mandala Sparkle in Draco)
  • fiberfill for stuffing
  • safety eyes in two sizes ( a large size for the eyes and a small size for the nostrils)
  • optional a piece of cardboard about 7 inches long
unicorn yarn

You don’t have to use the same hook and yarn I did. It just might affect the finished size. I love the yarns I chose for the horn and hair because they’re sparkly. It helps add a little extra magic!

You could also use buttons for the eyes or nostrils, or you could embroider them. I’m really terrible at embroidery, so I avoid it whenever possible!

Crochet Unicorn Pattern

I like to begin with the body and sew on the pieces as I go.

With the Soft Pink yarn, create a magic ring. Stuff firmly as you go to make sure you get an even stuffing.

Mane and Tail

To create the mane and tail, I began by wrapping the yarn I used for the hair around a piece of cardboard that’s about 7 inches long. I wrapped it around many times and then cut through all the yarn across the bottom of the cardboard.

You don’t have to use a piece of cardboard. You could wrap it around anything that’s the length you want your unicorn’s hair to be. You could also cut each strand individually.

Because the yarn I use changes colors, I cut up the entire skein like this. That way I had access to all of the colors and control over how they went on. I liked having mine be completely random, but you could attach them in layers or stripes or whatever!

unicorn hair

To attach the hair, insert the crochet hook around a post of one of the single crochets on the body wherever you want the hair to go. Take two strands of yarn and fold them in half. Grab them with the hook and pull the yarn part of the way through.

attaching unicorn hair

Take the ends of the two strands of yarn and put them through the other end that’s been pulled around the post. Pull them tight to create a knot around the post.

Do this to create strands of hair wherever you want them. I created the mane by making strands of hair starting right behind the horn. I made them about four strands wide and going down about 12 strands.

attaching unicorn hair

For the tail, I did a four by four square on the unicorn’s butt. Then I cut a piece of the white yarn I used for the horn to tie a bow around the tail.

unicorn tail

And that’s it! You’re unicorn is finished! I made some for my little girls, and they could not be more happy!
