This crochet robot is soft enough to cuddle. Instead of nuts and bolts, he’s made with yarn and love. Learn how to make him with this free crochet pattern!

Pattern Notes

The head, body, and feet of this robot are made by crocheting six pieces using rows and attaching them together to create blocks. My robot turned out much bigger than I had intended at 26.5 inches tall! I considered making him smaller until I saw my little girls running around so happily with him. Then I couldn’t bring myself to change it!

If you would like a smaller robot, play around with a smaller hook and/or thinner yarn. Alternatively, you could make it even BIGGER by using a bigger hook or yarn.

Stitches and Abbreviations

Here are the crochet stitches and abbreviations I use. Click on them if you need a refresher on how to do any of these.

Any parts of the pattern written in brackets [ ] will tell you that this part needs to be repeated. It will be followed by an ‘x’ to let you know how many times it should be repeated.

Crochet Robot Pattern

Head

Begin by making six panels in Medium Gray. You will attach them all together to create a block.

Panels – make 6

Ch 11

Row 1: in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in each remaining stitch across (10)

Rows 2-10: ch, turn, and sc across (10)

Do not fasten off. Now you are going to crochet down one side, across the bottom, and up the other side. Turn your work to the right to begin single crocheting down the first side.

Place 10 single crochets evenly down the length of the panel. I placed matching colored stitch markers on the first and last stitch to make it easier to differentiate when attaching the panels to each other.

Turn the panel to the right and sc 10 across the bottom into the loops of the starting ch.

Turn the panel to the right and sc 10 evenly across the third side of the panel. Once again, I placed matching stitch markers in the first and last stitches.

Finally, slst to the first sc of row 10. Fasten off and weave in the end. That completes one panel. Make five more till you have a total of six.

Putting it together

Now you are going to begin attaching them to create a block. I use single crochet to attach them together. If you are as OCD as I am, you’ll want to make sure that all your rows are going the same way (like have all the rows going horizontal or vertical).

Begin by placing two of the panels together. You will join them by single crocheting into the tops of both panels. Using the Medium Gray yarn, attach to one side of the two panels.

Single crochet into all 10 stitches across the two panels. Make sure that you are working into the stitches on both panels.

Once you’ve worked 10 single crochets across the entire side, fasten off and weave in end.

Attach two more panels to these first ones in the same manner till you have a row of four panels.

Now, fold this row of four panels in half and attach the first panel to the last panel in the same manner.

This creates the outline of your block. Take one of the two remaining panels and place it on one side of the outline of the block.

Attach the Medium Gray yarn to your work and join this panel to the others by single crocheting around all four sides making sure to work your stitches into both the panel and the block outline. You may find that you need to add extra stitches in the corner to make sure you don’t have any large gaps. Fasten off and hide the end.

Now would be a good time to add the safety eyes. It doesn’t matter too much which side you put them on, so choose whichever side you’d like. Put the safety eyes between rows 8 and 9 and about 8 stitches apart.

Now you will add the final panel on the other side. Before you have completely attached the last panel, however, stuff firmly.

Finish attaching the final panel, fasten off, and hide the end. Whew! Your head is finished! I know that was probably a little confusing, so feel free to comment or email me if you have any questions!

Body

Just like the head, the body is made with the Medium Gray yarn and uses six panels that you crochet together to form a block. However, they aren’t all the same size. You will make two front/back panels, two top/bottom panels, and two side panels.

Front/Back Panels – make 2

ch 25

Row 1: in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each remaining ch (24)

Rows 2-24: ch, turn, sc across (24)

Without fastening off, you will crochet down one side, across the bottom, and up the other side just as you did with each panel for the head. Crochet 24 sc evenly across the first side, 24 sc into the other loops from the beginning ch along the bottom, and 24 sc evenly across the other side.

I placed stitch markers on the first and last stitches of the two sides, just as I did when making the head panels to make it easier to differentiate where the sides begin and end when attaching them together.

Slst to the the first sc of row 24. Fasten off and hide end.

Top/Bottom Panels – make 2

ch 25

Row 1: in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each remaining ch (24)

Rows 2-10: ch, turn, sc across (24)

Without fastening off, you will crochet down one side, across the bottom, and up the other side just as you did with the other panels. Crochet 10 sc evenly across the first side, 24 sc into the other loops from the beginning ch along the bottom, and 10 sc evenly across the other side.

I placed stitch markers on the first and last stitches of the two sides, just as I did when making the head panels to make it easier to differentiate where the sides begin and end when attaching them together.

Slst to the first sc of row 10. Fasten off and hide end.

Side Panels – make 2

ch 11

Row 1: in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each remaining ch (10)

Rows 2-24: ch, turn, sc across (10)

Without fastening off, you will crochet down one side, across the bottom, and up the other side just as you did with the other panels. Crochet 24 sc evenly across the first side, 10 sc into the other loops from the beginning ch along the bottom, and 24 sc evenly across the other side.

I placed stitch markers on the first and last stitches of the two sides, just as I did when making the head panels to make it easier to differentiate where the sides begin and end when attaching them together.

Slst to the first sc of row 24. Fasten off and hide end.

Putting it together

Just like with the head, you will attach the pieces by crocheting four together to form the outline of the block and then sew the end pieces around the outline to close it off.

Create the outline by crocheting together a front/back panel, then a top/bottom panel, then a front/back panel, then a top/bottom panel.

Then fold it in half and crochet the first front/back panel to the last top/bottom panel.

Attach the first side panel to the block outline by single crocheting all the way around both the side panel and the outline. You may need to add extra sc in the corners to avoid big gaps.

Attach the second side panel in like manner. Before you have finished completely attaching, however, stuff the body firmly.

Finish attaching the side panel. Fasten off and hide end. That completes the body!

Now you need to attach the head to the body. You have two options. You can attach the head in the middle of one of the top/bottom panels or in the middle of one of the side panels.

Originally, I had planned on attaching the head to the top/bottom panel, but that made the robot turn out broader than expected.

So instead I rotated the body and attached the head to one of the side panels to give him a longer, thinner body.

After choosing which orientation you’d like for the body, attach a piece of yarn to the head and use it to sew the head to the body. I chose not to attach the head to the body by sewing it right along the outside. Instead, I went a row or two in and sewed along that way to give the head a little more distinction from the body.

Body Embellishments

Now it’s time to add a few buttons and a screen to the body to make it a little bit more robot-y. You could sew the buttons and screen on, but I choose to hot glue them. Not only is that a lot easier (and I’m all about easier!) but it also helps these embellishments have more defined edges.

Buttons – make 3

I made each button a different color. I used red, yellow, and green.

Create a magic ring.

Round 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Round 2: inc x 6 (12)

Fasten off. If you are going to hot glue the buttons to the body, weave in the end. If you plan on sewing on the buttons, leave a long tail.

Screen

Using the white yarn, ch 16.

Row 1: in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in each remaining ch (15)

Rows 2-15: ch, turn, sc across (15)

Fasten off. Weave in the end if you plan on gluing onto the body. Leave a tail if you plan on sewing.

Attach the buttons and the screen to the body either by gluing or sewing.

Head Electrodes

Next, it’s time to create head electrodes. You’ll need to make two and attach them to either side of the head.

Using Varsity Blue, ch 6.

Row 1: in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc across (5)

Rows 2-5: ch, turn, sc across (5)

Without fastening off, sc across each side. Crochet 5 sc evenly across the first side, 5 sc into the other loops of the beginning ch, 5 sc evenly across the other side, and 5 sc across row 5. Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

Sew the electrodes to the middle of each side of the head.

When you have the electrode sewed on most of the way, stuff. Finish sewing, fasten off, and hide end.

Head Antenna

Now we are going to make the antenna that goes on top of the head. For this, I use red, black, and blue yarn. I also use a pipe cleaner to help the antenna stand up.

Using Varsity Red, create magic ring.

Round 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Round 2: inc x 6 (12)

Rounds 3-4: sc around (12)

Round 5: dec x 6 (6)

Stuff and switch to black yarn.

Round 6: dec x 3 (3)

Rounds 7-12: sc around (3)

Switch to Varsity Blue.

Round 13: inc x 3 (6)

Round 14: inc x 6 (12)

Round 15: [inc, sc] x 6 (18)

Round 16: [inc, 2 sc ] x 6 (24)

Rounds 17-18: sc around (24)

Fasten off and leave a long tail for attaching to the head.

Now we are going to insert the pipe cleaner using a tapestry needle.

Thread the pipe cleaner through the needle. I pulled the needle through to the middle of the pipe cleaner and folded it in half. This way the pipe cleaner was double thick and added extra support to the antenna.

Insert the needle into the opening in the blue part of the antenna.

Push it all the way through the black part of the antenna and out the red part.

Cut the pipe cleaner to free the needle on one side and hide the ends on the other.

Stuff the blue portion of the antenna and sew it to the very top of the head.

Shoulder Joints – make 2

With Varsity Blue, create a magic ring.

Round 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Round 2: inc x 6 (12)

Round 3: [inc, sc] x 6 (18)

Rounds 4-5: sc around (18)

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Stuff and attach to the top of each side of the robot.

Arms – make 2

Start by making two fingers.

Using Soft Grey, create a magic ring. Stuff as you go along.

Round 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Rounds 2-4: sc around (6)

On the first finger, fasten off. On the second finger, continue on to round 5.

Round 5: 6 sc around first finger, 6 sc around second finger (12)

Round 6: sc around (12)

Round 7: [dec, sc] x 4 (8)

Round 8-24: sc around (8)

Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

Sew arms to the shoulder joints.

Hip Joints – make 2

With Varsity Blue, create a magic ring.

Round 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Round 2: inc x 6 (12)

Round 3: [inc, sc] x 6 (18)

Round 4: [inc, 2 sc] x 6 (24)

Rounds 5-7: sc around (24)

Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

Stuff and attach the bottom of the robot’s body.

Legs – make 2

Using Soft Grey, create a magic ring. Stuff as you go along.

Round 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Round 2: inc x 6 (12)

Round 3: in BLO, sc around (12)

Rounds 4-20: sc around (12)

Fasten off and leave a tail for attaching.

Attach to the hip joints.

Feet – make 2

The feet are made by creating 4 side panels and two toe/heel panels. Then they will be sewn together to create a block just like the head and body. Use black yarn.

Side panels – make 4

Ch 13

Row 1: in 2nd ch from the hook, sc in each remaining ch (12)

Row 2-8: ch, turn, sc across (12)

Without fastening off, you will crochet down one side, across the bottom, and up the other side just as you did with each panel for the head and body. Crochet 8 sc evenly across the first side, 12 sc into the other loops from the beginning ch along the bottom, and 8 sc evenly across the other side.

I placed stitch markers on the first and last stitches of the two sides, just as I did when making the head and body panels to make it easier to differentiate where the sides begin and end when attaching them together.

Slst to the first stitch of row 8. Fasten off and hide end.

Toe/heel panels – make 2

Ch 9

Row 1: in 2nd ch from the hook, sc in each remaining ch (8)

Rows 2-8: sc across (8)

Without fastening off, you will crochet down one side, across the bottom, and up the other side just as you did with each panel for the head and body. Crochet 8 sc evenly across the first side, 8 sc into the other loops from the beginning ch along the bottom, and 8 sc evenly across the other side.

I placed stitch markers on the first and last stitches of the two sides, just as I did when making the head and body panels to make it easier to differentiate where the sides begin and end when attaching them together.

Slst to the first stitch of row 8. Fasten off and hide end.

Putting it together

Attach the four side panels to each other, by sc the long sides together.

Fold in half and sc the first and last side panel together to create the outline of the block.

Attach the first toe/heel panel to the outline of the block by crocheting all the way around both the outline and the toe/heel panel. You may need to add more stitches to the corners to avoid large gaps.

Fasten off and hide the end.

Attach the second toe/heel panel to the outline of the cube in the same manner as the first. Before it is completely attached, however, stuff the foot firmly.

Finish attaching. Fasten off and hide the end.

Attach some yarn to the bottom of each leg and use it to sew the legs to the feet.

Bow Tie

Want your robot to be a little more formal? Add a bow tie! I made mine with Varsity Red.

Ch 30 and slst to the first ch to form a circle.

Round 1: ch 1, hdc in the same ch as the slst and all the way around, slst to first hdc (30)

Rounds 2-4: ch1, hdc around, slst to first hdc of round (30)

Fasten off and leave a long tail for wrapping and attaching.

Fold the bow tie in half with the tail in the middle. Using the tail, wrap it tightly around the middle of the bow tie several times to cinch it.

Attach the bow to the body underneath the head.

And there! Your robot is finished! This pattern ended up taking more time and being way more difficult than I expected. But my kids loved them so much it was worth it! Comment or send me an email if you have any questions.
