Mini Monkey Free Crochet Pattern Notes

I made these little bad boys using continuous rounds. The legs are joined together to form the body, and the body leaves holes for you to attach the arms to. I used a 3.5 mm hook with medium weight yarn, and they worked up to be about 4.5 inches tall. Feel free to mix it up with different sizes of hooks and yarns to make an extra mini or not so mini monkey!

Mini Monkey Free Crochet Pattern

Eye Cicles

Begin by making the circles for the eyes so that you can attach them while crocheting the body.

Make 2.

With light brown yarn, create a magic ring.

Round 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Before tightening the magic ring, insert safety eyes. Tighten the magic ring around the safety eye and slip stitch to the first single crochet. Fasten off, and weave in ends.

Legs

Make 2.

With light brown yarn, create a magic ring.

Round 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Round 2: sc around (6)

Change color to dark brown.

Rounds 3-4: sc around (6)

Fasten off the first leg. DO Not fasten off the second leg. Instead, continue to the body. Stuff the legs firmly. I like to use the back of my crochet hook to really push the stuffing in there.

Body (continued from legs)

Round 5: ch 6, 6 sc around the first leg, 6 sc across ch, 6 sc around second leg, 6 sc across other side of ch (24)

Round 6: [3 sc, inc] x 6 (30)

Round 7: [2 sc, inc, 2sc] x 6 (36)

Rounds 8-14: sc around (36)

In the next round, you are going to be creating holes where the arms will be attached. If you crochet much tighter or looser than I do, you might need to adjust where you put the chains and skipped stitches. Simply crochet more or less single crochets at the beginning of the round to make sure that the arm holes are centered in front of the body.

Round 15: 9 sc, ch 3, skip 3 stitches, 6 sc, ch 3, skip 3 stitches, 15 sc (36)

Round 16: 9 sc, 3 sc in ch, 6 sc, 3 sc in ch, 15 sc (36)

Rounds 17-20: sc around (36)

Add safety eyes in the eye circles between rounds 18 and 19 about 5 stitches apart. Because the eyes are going through two layers of crochet, it may be difficult to put the backs on them. You may have an easier time by flipping the backs the other way, and attaching them that way.

Start stuffing the body firmly and continue stuffing along the way. Make sure to really stuff down into the legs.

Round 21: [2 sc, dec, 2 sc] x 6 (30)

Round 22: [3sc, dec] x 6 (24)

Round 23: [sc, dec, sc] x 6 (18)

Round 24: [dec, sc] x 6 (12)

Round 25: dec x 6 (6)

Fasten off. Make sure the body is stuffed firmly to the top. Use the tail to close the opening, and hide the end.

Arms

Make 2.

With the dark brown yarn, attach to the corner of the opening for the arm.

Round 1: 6 sc around the opening of the arm (6)

Rounds 2: sc around (6)

Change to light brown yarn.

Round 3: sc around (6)

Fasten off. Push as much stuffing into the arm as you can. I use the back of my crochet hook to do this. Use the tail to pull the hole closed, and hide the end.

Face

With light brown yarn, create a magic ring.

Round 1: 6 sc in mr (6)

Round 2: [inc] x 6 (12)

Fasten off, and weave in end.

With light brown yarn, ch 15. Fasten off, and weave in ends.

You’re now going to use hot glue to put the face together. Begin by putting hot glue behind the eye circles. I then used a needle to gently pull the eye circles to where I wanted them and hold them in place while the glue dried. Do this all the way around each eye circle. Ideally, the eye circles should be even and as close to touching as you can get them.

Next, take the circle you just created, and glue it right underneath the eyes, overlapping the eye circles. Apply plenty of glue, and push it down all around so it says securely in place.

After that, take the chain of 15 and glue it even around the top half of the eye circles to make the face look more whole.

Finally, use fabric glue to give this monkey and lil nose and mouth.

Ears

Make 2.

With light brown yarn, create a magic ring.

Round 1: 8 sc in mr (8)

Rounds 2-3: sc around (8)

Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Attach the ears to either side of the head. I sewed mine on around rounds 4-8.

Tail

With dark brown yarn, create magic ring.

Round 1: 4 sc in mr (4)

Rounds 2-20: sc around (4)

Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Attach tail to the butt of your monkey.

And you’re done! These little guys work up quickly, so it’d be cute to make a whole bunch of them and use them to act out monkeys jumping on the bed or swinging from a tree.
